November  2007

Thanks to all who continue to fill our “wood pile”, it will come in handy this winter.

The range is ready for use but REMEMBER, you MUST sign in at the bar before you use the range.  If your name is not on the signup log you will be asked to leave immediately.  Keep the range clean, trash barrels are there for a reason.

A THANKSGIVING HUNT

In the broad and general way, hunting parties may be divided into two great classes, those that people hear about and those they do not.  From the nature of the division, the first class is familiar.  There is the start, (the preparation); the finding of the game (usually deer), the slow pause, silent breathing, racing heart beat, squeezing of the trigger, the triumphal feeling which accompanies success.  Those members of this group are qualified, if only self anointed, to give pointers to other hunters.  They sit by the fire at their homes or clubs and expound upon their successes, providing instant replay of their triumph and suggestions on how others may duplicate their achievement.

The hunting party of the second class – that, which appears not on the written page, nor in the mouths of men, is of the unsuccessful hunt.  The party has traveled far in its quest for big game and found none.  They have searched the woods for venison to bring home and satisfy the stay-at-homes’ palates but have returned empty handed.  They have faced the cold mornings and colder evenings; walked for miles in pursuit of the elusive prize, trampled through snow and rain, and all in hopes of a glimpse of the mighty white-tailed deer.

We usually don’t hear much from this second class of hunters, but they are the hard and fast, dedicated to the pursuit and not necessarily to the success.  To them, the walk in the woods is a walk in heaven, quiet and filled with serenity.  When members of this group taste success, it is a success savored for many a year, for it is this group which far outnumbers the first, and it is these hunters who know the true meaning of hunting for Thanksgiving.
